About the Project :

In partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation, Syngenta Crop Protection AG, and Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture, TechnoServe is supporting smallholder tomato farmers in Nigeria, by addressing the root causes of the high post-harvest loss rates and increasing yields.

The project which is currently in its second year is assisting 45,000 smallholder tomato farmers to access improved agricultural inputs and technologies designed to positively impact on-farm productivity while addressing post-harvest losses.

The project is being implemented in Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Plateau states.

Primary Purpose :

Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Country Director, the Project Coordinator will oversee the project implementation, provide timely and accurate project reports, provide technical, market and expertise services for project beneficiaries, facilitate stakeholder relationships and performance management.

It should be understood that the tasks outlined below are the key responsibilities, but the employee is expected to perform any tasks that are necessary within the context of the evolving needs of the program.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Lead on delivery of project implementation phase and provide technical inputs in close collaboration with other team members.
  • Ensure close communication with donor representative to ensure that implementation is in line with expectations
  • Drive the quarterly and yearly report process and ensure report is submitted to donor(s )by due date- 21st of the following month after quarter’s end.
  • In collaboration with the Deputy Country Director, Head of Admin and Finance, produce an action and procurement plan for the implementation phase based on the findings and recommendations provided in the design phase
  • Develop project work plans and ensure timely implementation of the project activities in line with work plans and activity schedules.
  • Ensure work plan is approved and signed off by Director of Projects

  • Monitor project budget to ensure that spending is aligned with donor’s expectation as well with TNS corporate budget commitment.
  • Also ensure zero unallowable spend.

  • Work closely with the project MEL as well as regional MEL advisor to ensure high quality monitoring and evaluation through quality data collection and analysis.
  • Ensure the provision of quality data on a timely basis for internal project management and external reporting purposes.
  • Ensure that the project target of improving the livelihoods of 35,000 small holder farmers by increasing their yield by 50% and reducing post-harvest loss by 50% are met through training and aggregation, access to quality input and technology, access to finance, access to markets and working with state actors to develop and pass policies that are aimed at continuously catalyzing and improving the tomato value chain making it competitive.
  • Contribute to dissemination of good practice and lessons from the organization’s work and promote experience sharing and learning in the organization and among partners.
  • Manage and provide mentorship, leadership and direction to the field team in order to achieve results and coordinate field activities as stated in the signed off work plan.
  • Lead gender mainstreaming in all activities to ensure that no less than 40% of total beneficiaries are women.
  • Lead on farmer mobilization and enrollment. Organize and manage community sensitization outreaches.
  • Ensure that training curriculum is developed, reviewed, and approved. Also, ensure that delivery of training to the farmers is top notch and at the expected level.
  • Where farmer cooperatives exist, develop a plan around strengthening the existing structures through training and engagement and in communities where there are no cooperatives, put in place a mechanism for formation and ensure they are registered with the relevant government agency.
  • Support in facilitating financial / credit opportunities between financial and non-financial organizations and farmers as set out in the mechanism developed.
  • Support in executing the Access to Market plan as set out in the mechanism developed.
  • Identify various simple farm entry technologies that would drive significant impact to the livelihood of the farmers.
  • Support in final selection and engagement with consultants, contractors / suppliers developing SOWs, RFPs and so on.
  • Continuous engagement with the relevant state government agencies especially the identified value chain desk officers to ensure alignment with state priorities.
  • Design a strategy to strengthen linkages with any other NGO’s, private sector and service providers or government agencies in supporting and addressing various farmer’s needs.
  • Monitor, identify and advice on challenges and risks facing the implementation of the project.
  • Assist program management and business development when required.
  • Represent the project and organization, at internal and external functions, as assigned.
  • Required skills and experience

  • An MBA or Master’s degree in agricultural economics / agronomy / crop husbandry and management
  • Knowledge of agronomic principles and practices, including crops, soils and nutrient
  • At least 2 years’ experience supporting projects in the tomato value chain.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in supporting the delivery of agricultural focused programmes to improve livelihood and reduce poverty of smallholder farmers in Nigeria
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with private sector players (financial institutions, buyers, traders, transporters, input suppliers, processors in agriculture value chain) and state governments.
  • Experience with commonly used tools for market analysis and program design such as sub-sector analysis, gross margin analysis.
  • Profit or Loss and business planning.

  • Knowledge of the agriculture sector in Nigeria and its regulation and stakeholders
  • High level of computer literacy (primarily in Microsoft Office packages). Knowledge of Comcare, a data collection software package would be an advantage.
  • Project management certification PMP / PRINCE 2 would be an advantage
  • Excellent planning and time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure to deliver as part of a team
  • A high level of attention to detail and accuracy in working with numbers;
  • Work Station : Kano, Nigeria with travels to project locations
