Required Education and Skills / Experience

Minimum Bachelor's in Entomology, Ecotoxicology or related disciplineExperience in designing and conducting laboratory and / or field studies to assess for potential adverse effects on insectsFunctional knowledge of biostatistics, experimental design, exposure assessment, and analytical methodologyExcellent verbal and written communication skillsStrong project and time management abilitiesAgility to work on multiple projects and flexibility to meet business objectivesSelf-

motivated and capable of functioning as an independent scientist while being able to work effectively in a team environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conducting field surveys to collect information about the numbers and distribution of organisms;Taxonomy - classifying organisms;
  • Applying sampling strategies and employing a range of habitat survey techniques, such as geographic information systems (gis), global positioning systems (gps), aerial photography, records and maps;
  • Carrying out environmental impact assessments;Analysing and interpreting data, using specialist software programs;Habitat management and creation;
  • Writing reports and issuing recommendations;Liaising with and advising site managers, engineers, planners and others associated with a survey;
  • Building relationships with stakeholders, including members of the public;Carrying out research;Undertaking teaching in schools or in field centres;
  • Keeping up to date with new environmental policies and legislation;Contributing ideas about changes to policy and legislation, based on ecological findings.

    Qualifications Required

  • Applied Life Sciences;Biology (Specialising In Ecology);Botany / Plant Science;Conservation Biology;Ecology;Environmental Biology;
  • Environmental Management;Geography;Marine Biology;Zoology.

    Skills Required :

  • Enthusiasm about, and fascination for, animals and plants;Expertise in one or more groups of living organisms;Capacity to identify different species as appropriate to the role;
  • Enthusiasm for undertaking fieldwork in sometimes harsh conditions;Competence in understanding and usingStatistics and other ecological data;
  • The ability to use computer software for recording, analysing and presenting data and reports;Excellent written communication, research and presentation skills;
  • Experience of report writing;Confidence in using survey techniques and identification keys;Team working and project-management skills;
  • Self-motivation, energy and drive;An objective approach to working in conservation.

    Job Description

    Scope, design and plan ornithology survey programmes to industry best practice.Coordinate, manage and mentor a team of field-

    based ornithologists.Plan and allocate staff resources to projects to complete ongoing and forecasted workload.Input on and assist with the compilation of successful tenders to win work in a competitive market.

    Research and implement best-practice ornithology survey techniques and guidance for use in all work undertaken.Review ongoing field survey results and interpret for interim presentation to clients and with final project outputs in mind.

    Build strong relationships with clients, authorities and stakeholders, and proactively manage the client relationships to deliver the level of customer service expected.

    Drive the adoption of the most efficient survey and data management techniques, including by using technology for capturing and recording field survey data.

    Guide and review reports prepared by other Ornithology team members and write report inputs commensurate with your level of expertise as Principal Ornithologist.

    Undertake specialist ornithology fieldwork commensurate with your level of expertise, as required in the fulfilment of the Principal Ornithologist’s role.

    Qualifications

    The key requirements of the post will be :

    A third-level qualification in ecology, environmental or natural sciences, or other related fields that give the candidate the necessary skills to fulfil the role.

    A minimum of 10 years’ post-graduate experience in fulfilling similar functions or in a similar consultancy or professional role.

    Experience of undertaking research projects in the field of ornithology, and utilising or developing best-practice survey guidelines.

    Experience of technical / scientific report writing.A proven track record at building long-term professional relationships with clients and key ornithology stakeholders.

    To already be or to be working towards becoming a person of recognised standing in the ornithology community.Commercially-

    savvy and business-minded.Demonstrable ability to manage the busy and varied workload of a busy team of ornithologists.
