  • What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence.

We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949.

We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence.

We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

    Purpose

The ICRC’s translation team provides language services at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva. The core team of in-

house translators working into Arabic, English and French leverages an extended group of freelancers and translators in regional offices, for Arabic and Spanish / Portuguese, in delegations for Chinese and Russian to deliver a large volume of high quality work to HQ clients.

The in-house team, with its many years of experience and its linguistic expertise in all areas of the ICRC’s work, ensures consistency and continuity in the organization’s written communications communications that have an impact on the organization’s ability to fulfil its mandate and maintain its reputation.

    Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

The Senior English Reviser is a self-revising English translator who translates a wide range of texts in a variety of styles from French into English (and preferably also from Spanish and or Arabic), revises translations, and edits texts written in English.

As part of ensuring that the organization produces high quality and accurate work in English, the Senior English Reviser reviews and provides input on the assignment of work to freelance translators and agencies commissioned by the ICRC and answers language-

related questions from colleagues from other units.

The Senior English Reviser will manage a team of two in-house revisers and also oversee and train less experienced freelance translators and keep English-

language reference documents up-to-date. The Senior English Reviser will assess the quality and help the English editors based in the ICRC delegation in Delhi.

The successful candidate will be at ease working on highly sensitive documents under often tight deadlines, in coordination with colleagues from the other language sections and from other units of the organization.
