Purpose

The Interpreter translates and interprets between mainly Farsi / Pashtu / Dari / Urdu and the ICRC official Mission language (English) during meetings with beneficiaries, the authorities and representatives of other organizations.

She / he is part of the Protection team in Lesvos but could also occasionally be called upon to participate in other field activities and support other delegates in detention visits elsewhere in Greece.

The Interpreter contributes to the implementation of the Community-Based Protection (CBP), the recreational activities and Restoring Family Links (RFL) activities of the ICRC Mission in Greece and particularly in relation to the protection of migrants in Lesvos :

  • As part of a team, she / he carries out visits to Moria Reception and I identification Centre (RIC) and other facilities hosting migrants / refugees.
  • She / he provides translation and interpretation to support activities related to ICRC protection activities mainly through pre-
  • arranged face-to-face interviews or through the phone.

  • She / he provides written translation of documents (dissemination material, letters and emails.)
  • General Duties

  • Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
  • Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct
  • Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
  • Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times
  • Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times
  • Develops and maintains a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers
  • Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC
  • May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary
  • Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

    ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides the Protection team with timely and accurate interpretation of the dialogue with the migrants and the authorities
  • Interpret during interviews with migrants, through the phone or face-to-face interviews.
  • Assists the Protection team, as required, in preparation and during the field visits.
  • Contributes to the collection of information, ensuring the accuracy of the information collected.
  • Contributes to the organisation of, and participates in, events (workshops, training, etc., e.g., with Hellenic Police).
  • Briefs ICRC staff on cultural sensitivity and appropriate behaviour for the local context.
  • Translates documents for internal purposes (letters, working papers, internal and external reports), including confidential documents produced by the ICRC or received from outside the organization.
  • ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Follows up on all work-related messages and correspondence with the relevant contacts and departments
  • Is aware of the delegation’s objectives and has a good knowledge of the Movement and other contacts relevant to the position
  • Collects and shares information so as to improve the ICRC’s understanding of the environment and humanitarian trends and responses
  • Represents the ICRC in an appropriate way during activities, in meetings and in the field, and avoids any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC’s image
  • Takes responsibility for their own professional learning and development

    Reports to (role)

  • Protection Team Leader
  • Certifications / Education required

  • Fluent in English / Farsi / Pashtu / Dari / Urdu
  • University degree or other post-secondary degree an asset.
  • Professional Experience required

  • 3 years of experience in the field of expertise of the ICRC (migration, detention, protection)
  • Motivation for and commitment to humanitarian work, in particular to accompany ICRC team in visit of places of detention
  • Relationships

  • Externally, interacts with the authorities, representatives of other organizations and beneficiaries, both within and outside Moria RIC.
  • Additionally, she / he may be called upon to develop a network of contacts related to operational needs.

  • Internally, she / he is a member of Lesvos Protection Team, reporting to the Protection Team Leader as line manager and Interacts with staff from other departments.
