Department Description

Global Investment Research (GIR) is a newly formed department, bringing together our existing Equity, Fixed Income and Research Specialist teams across the globe into a world leading research business.

The teams also collaborate and work together with Real Estate, our Marco business, Mutli Manager strategies and Systematic Research while supporting the build out of our private assets capabilities.

The foundations to our fundamental research is our approach to sustainable investment to further imbed this key strategy into our processes.

With additional input from the wider investment business, including trading, portfolio management and investment directing, this combined function enables all investors to collaborate and actively work to seek and influence investment decisions with our client needs at the forefront.

Equities

The research department 125 global equity analysts and an additional 90 Research Specialists based across India and China, provide analysis on companies, stocks and sectors, working closely with fund managers to select stocks for their portfolios.

A high proportion of our Equity Research Analysts now also operate as Co Portfolio Managers ensuring research remains at the forefront of our investment decisions.

Fixed Income

Fundamental Credit Analysts perform in-depth analysis to evaluate the creditworthiness of an issuer and assess the relative value of its bonds.

The analytical work requires regular issuer contact and working together with a team of more than 40 Fixed Income analysts globally as well as research specialists in India and China.

Further research functions

Based on our bottom up research approach to fund management, a number of other investment functions benefit from the insights gained from specialist research teams including Real Estate, Macro, Systematic and Multi Manager strategies, while also helping to imbed and grow our private market capabilities within research.

There is strong collaboration between our macro strategy team and sustainable investing will maintain a critical role within this.

Purpose of the Role

Our Investment Analyst works as part of our regional research team in Asia Pacific (ex-Japan), assuming analytical responsibility for small cap stocks in the Greater China region and providing investment recommendations to our Portfolio Managers both locally and worldwide.

Analysts may rotate between different sectors and / or countries every 3-4 years. This provides a diversified experience in different markets and allows for a more all rounded investment professional.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for the analysis of Greater China small cap stocks as allocated by the Director, Equities.
  • Ramp coverage on those names within a time period agreed with the Director, Equities; typically around 25-30 names within 12 months.
  • Use all sources available to formulate a view on the stocks under your assigned coverage. This would include sources within the company as well as other industry sources such as competitors and customers, and external sources such as sell-side brokers and third-party research providers.
  • Maintain a current rating on each stock on the assigned coverage list. Ratings go from 1 (strong buy) to 5 (strong sell).
  • Publish regular reports on assigned stocks.
  • Communicate your views to PMs via written reports, voice mails, emails, and face to face meetings.
  • Host company meetings with companies in your coverage for PMs when appropriate.
  • Provide an industry updates on the industries under your assigned coverage.
  • Maintain a notional paper portfolio comprised of the stocks on your assigned coverage list.
  • Experience and Qualifications Required

    Key qualifications and attributes for the role include :

  • MBA / CFA or relevant degree
  • At least 5+ years of relevant experience in the financial industries
  • Excellent financial analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication capabilities
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Highly motivated, able to think logically, critically & quickly
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a Research / Investment team
  • Avidly interested and have a passion for the stock market and has demonstrated this interest through either previous work or personal investment
  • Willing to travel around the region at least 20% of the time
