About the Role :

  • Our client, a Nonprofit Organisationthat is committed to the advancement of African women in the fields of Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM);
  • has mandated us to source for acompetent Executive Director that will oversee the administration, programs andstrategic planning of the organisation’s activities in Africa.

    The ED willreport directly to the Board of Directors, and will be responsible for theconsistent achievement of the organisation’s mission and financial objectivesin program development and administration.

  • Key Responsibilities;
  • Leadership and Operational management

    Participate with the Board of Directors in developing avision and strategic plan to guide the organization.

    Assure that the organisation has a long-range strategy whichachieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.

    Provide leadership in developing program, organizational andfinancial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans andpolicies authorized by the board.

    Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors ofinternal and external issues that affect the organization.

    Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Director on allaspects of the organization & its activities

    Draft policies for the approval of the Board and prepareprocedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policieson an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate

    Ensure that personnel, client, donor and volunteer files aresecurely stored and privacy / confidentiality is maintained

    Provide support to the Board by preparing meeting agenda andsupporting materials.

    Project planning and Management

    Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals andobjectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization.

    Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of theorganization's programs and services.

    Ensure that the programs and services offered by theorganization contribute to the organization & its mission and reflect thepriorities of the Board.

    Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and servicesof the organization to maintain or improve quality.

    Ensuring that project goals and objectives are met inaccordance with grant proposals.

    Coordinating monthly meetings and ongoing communication withpartners and weekly meetings with internal staff.

    Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in allareas of the organization's work.

    Maintain official records and documents, and ensurecompliance with federal, state and local regulations.

    Human resources planning and management

    Determine staffing requirements for organizational managementand program delivery.

    Oversee the implementation of human resources policies,procedures, and practices including the development of job description for allstaff.

    Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment inaccordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.

    Recruit, interview, and select staff that have the righttechnical and personal abilities to help further the organization & itsmission.

    Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, andassist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program ofthe organization.

    Implement a performance management process for all staffwhich includes monitoring the performance of Staff on an on-going basis andconducting an annual performance review.

    Coach and mentor staff as appropriate to improve performance.

    Financial planning and management

    Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to preparea comprehensive budget; see that the organization operates within budgetguidelines.

    Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for theoperation of the organization.

    Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financialpractices.

    Research funding sources, oversee the development offundraising plans and write funding proposals to increase the funds of theorganization.

    Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on therevenues and expenditure of the organization.

    Jointly, with the board of directors, conduct officialcorrespondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers,execute legal documents.

    Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit theorganization to carry out its work.

    Fundraising

    Develop and expand local fundraising activities, with astrong focus on cultivating new and leveraging existing relationships withlocal foundations and individual donors.

    Build and manage a Board of Advisors to support the growthand sustainability of the foundation in Africa.

    Responsible for grants, major gifts, and other fundraisingmechanisms. Identify new potential funding streams. Support national strategicobjectives to increase funding streams, both regionally and nationally.

    Represent the organisation as part of international funding effortswith other Directors

    External Relations

    Establish sound working relationships and cooperativearrangements with community groups and organizations.

    Elevate the oragnisation’s profile, project its image and promote thebrand through engaged representation at conferences, meetings, education / Womenevents, media outreach, and public events

    Build and maintain relationships with local policymakers,union leaders, key stakeholders, interest groups, and elected officials

    Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs,and goals to agencies, organizations, and the general public.

    Requirements

    A good first degree in Social Sciences, Marketing or anyrelated discipline

    MBA or other related qualification will be a Plus

    Knowledge of leadership and management principles as theyrelate to non-profit / voluntary organizations.

    Knowledge of STEM Education

    Knowledge of all federal and provincial legislationapplicable to nonprofit sectors

    Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunitiesrelating to the mission of the organization

    Knowledge of human resources management

    Knowledge of financial management

    Knowledge of project management

    Professional experience in education, education policy,community / campaign organizing, and / or advocacy

    Willingness to travel occasionally

    Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraisingexperience, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, includinga board of advisors

    Solid written and verbal communications skills

    Exceptional strategic planning skills.

    Excellent project management and organizational skills withexcellent attention to detail.

    Ability to work independently and manage multipleresponsibilities simultaneously

    Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills. Ability tocritically assess challenges and identify effective solutions.

    Flexible, optimistic approach; committed to overcomingchallenges.

    Flexibility and comfort with ambiguity. Self-starter with anentrepreneurial spirit.

    Strong working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel,PowerPoint, and the Internet.
